Agenda Item: VI.D.

Consider/Approve Amendment to Board Policy #3.202 – Emergency Preparedness Plan

Background Information:

The Board amended its current policy on April 8, 2013. However, during the latest legislative session, Public Chapter No. 188 was signed into law effective July 1, 2013. This law requires a fire drill requiring full evacuation every month during the school year, with an additional fire drill to be conducted within the first fifteen (15) days of operation; an intruder drill to be conducted within the first thirty (30) days of operation; and three (3) additional safety drills during the school year, which may include inclement weather, earthquake, intruder, or other emergency drills not requiring full evacuation. To this end, TSBA has developed a sample policy for the Board’s consideration. Amendments to the Board’s policy should include a reference to armed intruders in the first paragraph; in paragraph 3, the phrase in the second sentence “thirty (30)” should be struck and replaced with “fifteen (15)”; and insert after the second sentence, “An intruder drill shall be conducted within the first thirty (30) days of operation.” The remainder of the Board’s current policy appears to comply with law.

Staff Recommendation:

Due to the amendment reflecting current state law, I recommend approval of the above-noted amendment to Board Policy #3.202 – Emergency Preparedness Plan, on first and final reading.
